‘Chef on Demand’ Spices Up The School Lunch Program

On Wednesday, Feb. 15, students in Westby Middle School and Westby Area High School enjoyed a unique culinary experience when John Parkyn, the school district chef, participated in an A’viands program to provide students with a chance to experience food in a whole new light with just a little spice to get their blood flowing.

A’viands, the food management company contracted by the district to oversee it’s food service program for the 2011-12 school year, offers “Chef on Demand” services to the school districts they contract with. The program integrates the A’viand’s program with the “Chef’s Move to Schools” initiative of the Obama Administration’s “Let’s Move! Campaign” to raise a healthier generation through school nutrition.

A’viands’ “Chef On Demand” program is a popular platform, offering healthy, culturally varied menu items, made by chefs displaying their cooking abilities on site. The sights, sounds and smells of a Mardi Gras themed meal were irresistible and filtered throughout the entire school branches.
