Celebrating Earth Day 2011

At A’viands we’re committed to sustainability. Through our sustainability program Naturally, we are always looking for ways to enhance our impact on the environment and help offset our carbon footprint.

In commemoration of Earth Day 2011, A’viands will be holding events throughout our Higher Education and Business Dining facilities to celebrate this day. Though many of our facilities already hold and maintain many sustainable practices & initiatives at all times, our directors, chefs and staff will be offering an array of incentives and specials throughout the day.

Here are just some of the things our dining facilities will be offering today…

Menu selections highlighting goods sourced entirely from local farmer’s.

Menu options featuring sustainable seafood choices approved by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program.

Farmer’s Markets selling produce and artisan baked goods from local farmers and businesses.

Tray-less dining facility wide (where not currently in place).

Free beverages with use of your own reusable cup.

Discounts on the purchase of reusable Eco To-Go Containers and coffee mugs.

On site compost and recycling collection and training (where not currently in place).

These are just some of the things we’re doing, but there is just too many to list!

Though we’re commemorating April 22nd as Earth Day, A’viands is committed to celebrating the Earth each and every day. We’re continuously working hard to be mindful of our impact and partnering with our customers and clients who share our passion.

So What Exactly is Earth Day?

Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment. Founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. While this first Earth Day was focused on the United States, an organization launched by Denis Hayes, who was the original national coordinator in 1970, took it international in 1990 and organized events in 141 nations.

Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network and is celebrated each year by more than 500 million people and several national governments in 175 countries.

In 2009, the United Nations designated April 22, International Mother Earth Day.
